How to be an influencer during the holidays, in 3 How to be an influencer during the holidays, in 3 easy steps:

🎄 Step 1: Buy your daughter the ingredients to make whipped cocoa like all the influencers she follows

🎄 Step 2: Pull the fancy bamboo straws out of the back of the drawer where you placed them when you said, "What will I ever use a BAMBOO STRAW for?"

🎄 Step 3: Definitely DON’T post a photo of her face when she realizes you have to mix the cocoa REALLY WELL or it just tastes like milk.

(“Oops” on that last one...)

This time of year, I think we’re all tuned in to This time of year, I think we’re all tuned in to the idea of miracles. But what if we’re all so busy looking for the big, flashy miracles like virgin births, that we miss small moments of intervention happening right before our eyes? Over at @themomhour’s blog I’ve shared three improbable, not super-impressive, “mini-miracles” that happened to me just last Monday. Link in bio!
I was thrilled when I finished my first #embroider I was thrilled when I finished my first #embroidery project. And then, self-doubt crept in:

“That line across Mr. Bear’s muzzle. It looks out of place to me. Is he a circus bear? Maybe I should have done it in a lighter color. And those flower details on the arrows? Those abstract “sunflowers” don’t look anything like the multi-petaled daisies I was supposed to stitch. And don’t even get me started on the hot mess that is the knotty back side of the towel..

If you thought you could just glance at this and think “cute bear”, boy, were you wrong! There are myriad errors I can point out to ruin your experience of it.

Isn’t it funny how we do this to ourselves? Whereas I could focus on the positives – wow I MADE this with my HANDS – instead it’s only to easy to see the flaws first. And instead of giving it to someone I love, a little part of me wants to hide it away in a drawer and take up a new hobby, perhaps something that doesn’t involve following patterns or tying neat knots.

But here’s the thing: I really enjoy embroidery. My approach may be more “bull in the china shop” than “delicate and painstaking” but hey, I’m having fun, I’m learning as I go, and finding that my goal of giving handmade Christmas gifts is doable…as long as I don’t add the word “perfect” or “like store bought” to the description.”

“I’ll be honest with you: during the holidays, “I’ll be honest with you: during the holidays, I mourned that missing mantel to a disproportionate degree. And when Isaac, about six at the time, asked “How can Santa get in without a fireplace?” I felt, for just a moment, as though I’d failed as a mother. Let’s be honest: don’t we all have something like that? Some unmet standard we hang our holiday-mom hats upon, some memory from our childhoods – or photo from Instagram – we try in vain to re-create, worrying that if the picture looks different from the one in our heads, we’re letting our families down.”
